MIGHTY FOOD FARM NEWSLETTER Issue 2, Vol. 1 April 25, 2007 HAPPY SPRING! We have been hard at work here at the farm. Things are really starting to pick up and especially with that spurt of warm weather we had. We have been transplanting the seedlings like crazy. This past week we planted broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, head lettuces, onions, shallots, scallions, beets, bok choy, more baby salad mix, and the list goes on… We have been making all of our raised beds by hand using rakes and a beastly rototiller. We have been quite sore, but getting a lot done. The farm has also recently acquired a lot of new equipment! Our landlord, Sally recently bought a Massey Ferguson tractor with a bucket loader and a back hoe. We are so excited! Our cultivating tractor (lovingly called “Weedy”) also arrived. Chuck went to the Food Bank Farm in Hadley, Mass to pick her up. These two tractors will be extremely useful in helping the farm stay on track and on time during the season. The greenhouse is packed full of tomato, eggplant, pepper, leek, onion, lettuce, and flower transplants (among other exciting vegetables). The greenhouse cucumbers have been planted and are starting to set flowers! It is nice to be in the greenhouse on those rainy days seeding and repotting. Thanks to all of you who have sent in the deposits for the CSA shares. We will be setting dates for the first pick-ups at the farm and in Bennington come mid-May. Hope all of you are doing well, and think about warm sunny weather! See You Soon, Chuck and Lisa Here is the Greenhouse. The cucumbers are in the center bed. This is the first day we used “weedy” to mark out rows in the beds for transplanting. This is our main field planted with all those crops listed. The white row cover keeps the crops warm at night.
